Whirlwind hop to Chicago to co-chair the session, “What’s new and what works: Global perspectives on microneedling and RF microneedling” early Saturday morning, with the queen of laser Dr. Tina Alster.

And global it was! Thank you to our esteemed expert faculty for traveling around the world to join us, sharing bedside experiences and innovative approaches to treat both cosmetic and medical skin concerns of patients of all skin hues.

Of course, the meeting would not be complete without cherished reunions with mentors, work sisters and friends - #fullheart 🫶🏻

Last week, Dr. Li was part of a multi-nation dermatologist delegation with @avene representing Canada - travelling to Toulouse, Avène and finishing strong at the @eadv_ 2025 Congress in Paris.

It was inspiring to learn about its parent company, @pierre.fabre.group and its humble pharmacy roots and respect of nature in its ingredient discovery and formulation development.

The company is 86% owned by the Pierre Fabre Foundation, and is a government-recognized, public-interest organization.

Dr. Li stayed at the @Avene hotel and experienced the connected Hydrotherapy Centre, where patients can receive 3-weeks cycled treatment with its mineral-rich water, for various common inflammatory skin ailments such as eczema and psoriasis.

Effective September 1, the European Union (EU) has banned TPO in gel polishes.

Dr. Li was asked to weigh in on the safety and science on the breaking story and topic - aired last night nationally on 6 pm news.

Some key points at this time:

1. TPO is a photoinitiator that ‘cures’ or hardens the gel nail with UV or LED exposure.
2. Animal studies using substantial dose exposure showed negative male reproductive concerns, but this has not been evaluated in humans.
3. Regular nail polish does not contain TPO.
4. The ban from the EU takes a hazard-based approach (based on assessing the inherent properties of an ingredient).
5. There are alternatives available at nail salons from popular brands (and we may see more as brands choose to reformulate to provide greater, globally-compliant options) that are TPO-free - just ask!
6. More real-world exposure data and research on humans are needed to more fully understand the risk potential to guide regulatory decisions.
7. What we do know is that repeated and cumulative exposure to UV used to cure gel polish has been scientifically shown to increase skin cancer risk - protective measures include applying SPF; wearing a dark, opaque glove with finger-tip cut-outs; or altogether choosing powder or LED-hardened gel manicures.

Dr. Li was asked to weigh in on the safety and science on the breaking story and topic - aired last night nationally on 6 pm news.

Some key points at this time:

1. TPO is a photoinitiator that ‘cures’ or hardens the gel nail with UV or LED exposure.
2. Animal studies using substantial dose exposure showed negative male reproductive concerns, but this has not been evaluated in humans.
3. Regular nail polish does not contain TPO.
4. The ban from the EU takes a hazard-based approach (based on assessing the inherent properties of an ingredient).
5. There are alternatives available at nail salons from popular brands (and we may see more as brands choose to reformulate to provide greater, globally-compliant options) that are TPO-free - just ask!
6. More real-world exposure data and research on humans are needed to more fully understand the risk potential to guide regulatory decisions.
7. What we do know is that repeated and cumulative exposure to UV used to cure gel polish has been scientifically shown to increase skin cancer risk - protective measures include applying SPF; wearing a dark, opaque glove with finger-tip cut-outs; or altogether choosing powder or LED-hardened gel manicures.

There remains ongoing evaluation and surveillance by a number of dermatologists worldwide, to navigate how to continue helping (and educating) patients with acne so they can benefit from use of this high-yield active.

With my research team, we weighed in on the topic, publishing our findings and perspectives in the Journal of the European Academy of Dermatology and Venereology earlier this month.
